Those Left Behind

I see their faces,

haunted faces,

faces that have seen death,

faces that know loss.

They are bowed down,

probably praying.

The woman’s lips are moving like Hannah’s

with no sound coming out.

These are the ones that have been left behind.

Their expressions are hard and soft too,

hard when the remember what they have lost,

a human being… a person… God’s own being.

But when they think of the memories the person left,

the features become soft.

As each memory is replayed by the mind,

their loved one,

their light.

Extinguished like a candle,

and he was gone.

Death is cruel and such a tragedy,

especially for those left behind.

I see their faces,

I want to cry too.

I know loss too,

I know what it is to miss someone,

to know that I will never see them again on this earth.

My heart mirrors their pain,

and I cry.

We have all been left behind.

What does Scripture say?

The dead in Christ shall rise first…

So we will see our loved ones,

soon…

We who are alive will be caught up in the clouds,

“and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

What comfort! what joy!

for those left behind.

Being left behind is like a haze,

a never ending nightmare.

When will the Lord come?

Will the pain ever end?

Always praying for strength from the Lord,

looking for your loved one everywhere,

especially in the clouds.

Wishing for one more reunion…

Just to hold him one more time.

Just to tell him how much I love him.

How much he means to me.

Alas! He is gone…

Gone home to be with the Lord.

So their faces are haunted,

they know death,

they have experienced loss,

and their faces tell the story.

The Lord will surely comfort them,

Then one day… one day…

their broken hearts will heal,

their tears will cease,

their hope will be renewed,

their prayers will be answered.

And their pain will end.

He who gives life will make all things right.

“and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

Will you be there too?
