Naturalista: Chechiwa Nyangu (Zambia)

Hi everyone. So I disappeared without giving you the whole triple dose *face palm* I apologise from the bottom of my heart. So let’s get the back to the interviews. To make up for my lack of a triple dose I will do a double dose today! So two Naturalista interviews. Can I get a whoop Whoop?!

The next interviewee is CHECHIWA! She writes too, and I am trying to push her to go back to it. And yes to answer your question she is from that uber group. You know the one? That houses my wonderful group of super ladies – Afro-Dite Yep! Without further ado let’s jump right into it!

Question One: Why did you choose to become a Naturalista?

CN: I have been fully natural since 2012 but it wasn’t until mid 2014 after taking down my weave, looking at my stagnant hair growth and barely there edges that a thought crossed my mind… “I should Google how to take care of black people’s hair…” It was like I found a whole new world and have not looked back.

Question Two: Did you big chop (BC) or transition:

CN: I big chopped.

Question Three: Why did you choose the BC route?

CN: I big chopped because I wanted a fresh start. After my big chop I was left with about 2 inches of hair. I was already natural at this time but my hair was NOT healthy.

Question Four: What did you discover about going the natural route?

CN: I discovered that I loved seeing the progress as it is easier to see growth and health when hair is much shorter and growing in thicker and faster, it kind of made be scissor happy for a bit there, lol.

Question Five: What would you have done differently? Do you regret the decision?

CN: I do not regret my decision. Only thing I would have done differently after going on my healthy hair journey was not trim it so much.

Question Six: Please share your regimen.

CN: I am currently on a hair growth challenge with Afrodite hair group where we do the inversion challenge for 7 days every month using an oil of our choice and in between those weeks, I protective style the majority of the time, making sure to oil and massage my scalp at least 2 times a week, I also make sure to moisturise at least once a week. I use a monthly henna treatment for its strengthening properties before protective styling and do a hot oil treatment with my homemade hair growth oil or deep conditioning treatment depending on how I am feeling after taking down my protective style. I also allow about 4-7 days of rest before protective styling again. I use the LOC method after every wash.

Question Seven: What are your three hair staples?

CN: Conditioner, my hair growth oil mix and my Shea butter mix. I am serious about that LOC method.

Question Eight: What is your go to style?

CN: A bun.

Question Ten: What are the most memorable moments of being a Naturalista?

CN: My cutting off three inches of perfectly healthy hair last year because I blew out my hair and was scared I may have damaged it, lol.

Question Eleven: What has surprised you most about going natural?

CN: How easy it is. Maybe it has just become habit but it really is not as hard as most people think it is.

Question Twelve: What is the most common question people ask you about your hair?

CN: “How do I grow my hair faster?” Lol.

Question Thirteen: What does being a Naturalista mean to you?

CN: For me, being natural is about loving what is mine and giving myself the best possible care. Our hair is so beautiful and it is so rewarding to see it flourish.

One: The one thing people don’t know about you?

CN: Hmmm, I have a stuffed hare that my mother gifted me on my first birthday named Lulu.

Two: Favourite hobby/hobbies?

CN: Creative writing

Three: Three things you can’t live without?

CN: Laptop, my glasses and Lulu.

Four: If you could have a meal with anyone (passed away or alive) who would it be? What would you eat?

CN: My late brother Brian. I would take him out to have some ribs.

Five: If you had one super power what would it be?

CN: To manipulate time.
